Loaded Language Concerning Somalia

After discussing the ridiculous nature of the coverage that the pirate situation in Somalia is getting I decided to browse around and see what non-US papers were writing. I was surprised to find that on the front page for BBC's website there was an article about Congressman Donald Payne's plane being targeted by mortars as he flew out so Somalia where he had been meeting with officials about the hostage situation. I didn't find anything about this on the front web pages of NY Times or LA Times. The Washington Post has an article which takes the stance, "The pirate attack on the U.S.-operated container ship last week and the mortar attack Monday were not directly related, but they illustrated the continuing lawlessness in Somalia" , and then fills 3 pages full of the story of the Maersk Alabama. Both the articles portray Somalia as a failed state that has a weak government but one has to wonder why the Washington Post used the headline

Piracy, Mortar Attack Evidence of Ongoing Chaos in Somalia

Rescued Crew Urges Obama to Act on Hijackings as Mogadishu Gunmen Fire on U.S. Congressman's Plane

We'll have to see...
