About the St Lawrence University African student Union:
“The purpose of the African Student Union shall be to promote awareness about Africa in the St. Lawrence community, build solidarity among Africans on campus and provide discussion on issues related to Africa for students, faculty, administrators and alumni interested in Africa.” Article One: African Student Union: Constitution of Rights and Responsibilities
The organisation endeavors, first and foremost, to act as a support system for African students at St Lawrence University by nurturing leadership and giving members a platform to showcase their cultures, ideas and abilities. Also part of our core objectives is the implementation of programming that engages the St Lawrence University community in the discussion of issues pertaining to Africa and the world at large. To this end, the African Student Union continues to host the annual Africa Night, an event that's meant to showcase African culture, talent and cuisine in front of an audience that includes the St Lawrence University community (both FacStaff and students) and nearby communities. We also continue to raise awareness about humanitarian issues in Africa and have, in the past, fundraised for such causes as the Samburu Project.
In addition to the aforementioned core objectives, the ASU is very much a part of the SLU social fabric. We oftentimes collaborate with other organisations and even partake in other organisations' programming. In the last two years, for instance, we have participated in on-campus intramural competitions as a group and we are the reigning IM soccer champions.
